Police release suspects in Woodward Bar shooting

Victim remains in hospital after July 28 incident

By Dawn Wolfe Gutterman

DETROIT - The Detroit Police Department has released four suspects arrested in the shooting of a man outside the Woodward Bar on July 28, saying that witnesses could not identify the men in a line-up.

However, as of Aug. 4, the victim, who remains in Henry Ford Hospital, had not been contacted to look at police photos of the suspects.

The police "haven't called me at all," the victim said, since they initially interviewed him after he was shot in the stomach.

In a separate incident, a Detroit police spokesman said he was unable to locate a report on the alleged beating and robbery of a young transgender woman outside Ruth Ellis Center's transitional living facility in Detroit on July 28.

"We're experiencing a failure to follow up on the part of the Detroit Police Department regarding the hate crime against our transgendered youth who was walking home," said Ruth Ellis Center Executive Director Grace McClelland. "We are working with the Triangle Foundation to ensure that justice is served in this case."

However Jeffrey Montgomery, executive director of Triangle, said that police have not contacted him as of Aug. 4.

"We are frustrated and chagrined at the pace of these investigations and what in absence of any further info from the police seems to be a cavalier attitude. We are continiung to agressively work toward answers and further developments in this case," Montgomery said.
